Greenhouse Gardening

A greenhouse is a glass building in which plants are grown. The greenhouse itself protects the plants and keeps them at the right temperature for growing. There are commercial greenhouses and smaller greenhouses that can be put in your backyard. Greenhouse gardening is a great way to grow all sorts of plants without worrying about as much environmental impact.

What Kind of Greenhouse?

There are all sorts of different greenhouse kits available. Are you looking to extend your growing season but with limited space? Try season extenders and mini greenhouses. These provide temporary, often portable, protection for your plants. Extend your growing season a few weeks without taking up a lot of space permanently.

If you want a larger greenhouse, get a starter greenhouse. They are reasonably sized and the kit is ready for a beginner. Extend your growing season to enjoy blooming flowers longer and to grow more fresh fruits and vegetables.

For a more serious gardener, get a high-quality greenhouse at the right size and style you need. Greenhouses can be very attractive made from wood or other materials. As you get more serious about your greenhouse, you can upgrade or add greenhouses.

Where to Put your Greenhouse

When finding a location, think about what spot will get the most sun in the winter and cooler months. In the summer, your plants can stay outside where it’s sunny longer, but when they’re in the greenhouse for the winter, they need to be in a different location. Make sure it is on a level area, too.

Light, Temperature, and Ventilation

These three specifications are very important. As mentioned earlier, sunlight is very important. Take your time finding a good location for the best sun exposure. A greenhouse shouldn’t be too hot. Since it will mostly be used in cooler months, the sun will likely be good for heating it. However, keep an eye on the temperature because if it gets too warm, you will need to increase ventilation.

Keep the plants well-spaced so that air can move around them easily. A proper ventilation system is most important in the summer when it can get very hot. Make sure it helps keep the plants at a good, low temperature.

Maintenance

Not only will you need to take care of your plants, but you’ll need to maintain your greenhouse’s condition. To help keep out pests and keep the greenhouse clean, regularly disinfect it with a bleach solution. Rinse it out in between such cleaning.
